It’s Wednesday, which means it’s a week since Opening Night, which means MIFF 2007 is officially seven days old. If you haven’t thrown yourself into the Festival yet, there’s no better way to sail through hump day with a smile on your face than with a MIFF fix. And if you don’t know where to start, read ahead and we’ll give you some pointers. Only twelve days to go… This coming Saturday at 1pm, MIFF audiences are invited to travel back in time with a unique cinematic offering, The Phantom of the Opera (1925), starring Lon Chaney and Mary Philbin. The Regent Theatre’s Wurlitzer organ, played by organist David Johnston, will provide the soundtrack to this silent classic. This is a rarely offered opportunity to enjoy the film as it was intended – and, for those who miss it, the performance will be repeated on Sat 11 Aug, 1pm.
Following tonight’s premiere screening of Rock 'n' Roll Outlaw – a homegrown tribute to esteemed rockers Rose Tattoo – at the Greater Union at 9.15pm, come join the filmmakers at a party that will see Cherry Bar rockin’ like there’s no tomorrow. From 10.30pm, the music of Rose Tattoo and their other compadres in rock ‘n’ roll will be pumping out until who-knows-when. Entry is free.
We're all out of tickets to tomorrow’s 9.25pm screening at ACMI of local hip-hop doco Words of the City which means the vibe should be high for the film’s party, taking place at Ding Dong Lounge. From 10.30pm, hear good beats and rhymes, with special appearances from TZU’s MCs and DJ Perplex, the current Australian DMC champion and, just confirmed, Wire MC from Sydney. Coopers Festival Lounge @ ForumThere’s only one place where MIFF-goers and friends should be seen outside the cinema – and that’s the Coopers Festival Lounge, open daily from the afternoon until late night at the Forum Theatre. Not only that, but the Coopers Festival Lounge is the one time during the year that you can sit back and relax under the glittering stars of the Forum without paying a cover charge.
Note to regulars: The Coopers Festival Lounge has been made even more ‘schmooze-friendly’ with the majority of Talking Pictures sessions moved to ACMI cinemas. This means your conversation can now flow freely with entertainment that is designed to complement your chatter, not impinge on it. Tonight at 6pm, Major Chord, better known as Danny Flynn, blends his folk sugar experimental delights yet again. Then at 8pm, DJ Tendekasha gives us his world tunes… all tunes.
Talking Pictures @ ACMI Join industry specialists, Festival guests, filmmakers and actors as they discuss everything ‘film’. Get up close and personal, and come armed with your best questions. Admission is free.
CANCELLED EVENT Due to circumstances beyond our control, today’s Talking Pictures, Nollywood Calling, has unfortunately been cancelled. This session was scheduled for 2.30pm at ACMI Cinemas. We apologise for the inconvenience.
Tonight at 6.15pm, Screens of David looks at the renaissance of Israel’s contemporary cinema, having been reinvigorated after battling poor box office and public indifference several years ago. Hosted by broadcaster John Safran, panelists will include Dvir Abramovich from University of Melbourne; Eddie Tamir from Champion Pictures; and Keith Lawrence from Australia Israel Cultural Exchange.
Tomorrow at 11.30am, the work of MIFF’s retrospective focus for this year, Shohei Imamura, will be fully dissected and discussed in An Introduction to Shohei Imamura. A member of the New Wave movement in Japan, Imamura reacted against the understated subtlety of the classical masters and delved into themes that others thought taboo. But was he just a vulgar anarchist? Join Freda Freiberg – film critic, lecturer and author – as she runs through the roll call of Imamura’s 45-year career.
Tomorrow at 6.15pm, Can your hear this? Music on Screen teases out the issues facing filmmakers when documenting live events and bringing music to the screen. Hosted by music journalist Patrick Donovan, panellists include Darcy Maine (Dirty Three, this Fri 9pm @ Greater Union & Fri 10 Aug 3pm @ ACMI), Lucille Desoto Clements (Rock 'n' Roll Outlaw tonight 9.15pm @ Greater Union & Thu 9 Aug 7.15pm @ ACMI), and Natasha Gadd and Rhys Graham (Words from the City , Sat 11 Aug 7.20pm @ ACMI).
