Like MIFF, it offers the ravenous festival-goer a broad assortment of films across different styles and genres and of course one of the best selections of Asian cinema in the international festival calendar. Widescreen readers will have to wait until July to know the results of the viewing and selection, but Michelle and Juliana can report that Asian cinema appears to be more diverse than ever. In a bustling, dollar-driven city where the latest film – blockbuster or arthouse – can be purchased for $10 at the local corner store, the HKIFF offers a sensory and cultural refuge in its diverse film program.![]() MIFF Members Screening ReminderThe Edge of HeavenDate: Sunday 20 AprilTime: 10.00am Where: Cinema Nova, 380 Lygon Street, Carlton Winner of The Ecumenical Jury Prize at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, The Edge of Heaven, is Fatih Akin’s fifth feature. Set in 1944 on an isolated farm Broken Sun tells the story of Jack, a 39 year old hermit farmer and WWI veteran living in isolation with a haunting feeling too hard to shake. When Jack encounters Masaru, a frightened and lost Japanese POW from the Cowra Breakout, his solitude abruptly ends. It is not long before Jack finds solace in the fact that he is not alone. They are, after all, just two men in different uniforms talking to each other. Unknowingly they both portray a desire for hope but can not escape the ineffable tragedy that awaits them both.
