Bumper Friday Widescreen EditionMake no MIFFstake about it – there's so much in the way of filmic ambrosia this weekend that a list of highlights moves beyond being a cinematic appetizer, to resemble more a celluloid three-course meal with a second helping of dessert. Here's the sizable sampler of what's on offer... Friday – Special GuestThe new Aussie chiller Acolytes – about a group of teens drawn into the dark world of a suburban serial killer – makes it's world premiere with cast and crew in attendance, with a Q&A following the screening. (9.30pm at Forum) Kosovar actress Arta Dobroshi is in town to present her new film Lorna’s Silence, directed by the Dardenne Brothers (Rosetta, The Child). She'll also take part in Q&A session after the screening. (7.00pm at Greater Union). There's also a gala screening of Matthew Newton’s directorial debut Three Blind Mice, screening with the Cannes Jury Prize-winning short Jerrycan, with the cast and crew of both films in attendance. (7.15pm at RMIT Capitol) Friday – Screening HighlightsTonights sessions showcase the range of this year's program, ranging from the dream-like exploration of the dark corners of a marriage in the Thai film Ploy (9.15pm at Greater Union) to the gay zombie erotica of Otto; Or, Up With Dead People (11.30pm at RMIT Capitol) Another highlight of tonight's viewing is the Swedish film Let the Right One In, an intriguing twist on the vampire genre adapted from John Lindqvist's award-winning novel of the same name. (7.15pm at Forum) On the sonic side of things, one of the standouts of this year's Backbeat program is screening tonight: Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell, a profile of an eclectic composer who influenced the New York underground 80s disco scene with his proto-garage dance music. Arthur Russell Paradise ExpressGet your dancing shoes on and give your body up to the music at a disco party at Roxanne Parlour (co-presented with ThreeThousand) following the screening of Wild Combination, celebrating the playful dance tunes of Arthur Russell and Larry Levan's Paradise Garage. We salute the man who, under the guise of various monikers – Dinosaur L, Loose Joints, Indian Ocean – produced playful and eccentric disco records which were hits of the pre-Studio 54 era. Features DJ People, Matt Hurst, Declan Kelly and Gloves, playing loft classics all night long. Roxanne Parlour Saturday's Guests and HighlightsDocumentary director Amiel Courtin-Wilson and producer Philippa Campey present the premiere screening of the feature Bastardy, a profile of distinctive Melbourne personality Jack Charles. (Saturday 2 August 2.45pm at Forum) World championship boxer and one-time Australian of the Year recipient Lionel Rose is in town Saturday night to present the biopic Lionel, along with director Edward Martin and producer Lizette Atkins. (Saturday 2 August 5.00pm at ACMI) Director Alexandra Westmeier presents her heart-rending documentary Alone in Four Walls, a profile of the lives of Russian teen boys serving time in a reform 'school'. (Saturday 2 August 1.00pm at Greater Union) Paul Cox (Nijinski, Innocence) presents his latest feature Salvation, along with actors Kym Gyngall and Wendy Hughes. (Satruday 2 August 3pm at ACMI) Brian Trechard-Smith introduces his Ozploitation classic Dead End Drive-In, a rollicking gasoline-fueled tale of a punk teen suburia imprisioned inside a drive-in cinema. (Saturday 2 August 7.15pm at ACMI) Also on Sautrday witness cinema as it first appeared with the Corrick Collection, a collection of short silent films made and toured throughout Australia, New Zealand and Asia between 1901 and 1914 by the enterprising Corrick family. Features live musical accompaniment from renowned pianist Mauro Colombis. (Saturday 2 August 11.00am at ACMI) Sunday's Guests and HighlightsMore special guests roll into town for the premiere of a plethora of MIFF's Australian features: Director Steven Kastrissios introduced the premiere of his thriller The Horseman, a story of a grieving father on a quest for revenge. (Sunday 3 August 9.15pm at Greater Union) The premiere of Australian coming-of-age pic Playing for Charlie, about a teen trying balance his responisibilties to his crumbling family with his personal sporting ambitions, will be presented by director Pene Patrick, producer Franziska Wagenfeld, and actors Jared Daperis and Shane Connor. (Sunday 3 August 3.00pm at ACMI) Director Tom Murray and producer Graeme Isaac present In My Father's Country, an exquisitely crafted doco following a young boy in the remote Aboriginal Dhuruputji community as he prepares for his initiation ceremony. (Sunday 3 August 5.00pm at Greater Union) Whatever Happened to Brenda Hean? is one documentary filmmakers attempt to uncover the fate of a Tasmanian environmental activist who vanished under suspicious circumstances 1972. Producer Michael McMahon presents this premiere screening. (Sunday 3 August 5.00pm at RMIT Capitol) Also on the cinematic smorgasbord for Sunday are the following treats: – Of Time and the City, director Terence Davies love song and eulogy to the city of his youth, Liverpool.
