Bumper Friday Widescreen Edition

Make no MIFFstake about it – there's so much in the way of filmic ambrosia this weekend that a list of highlights moves beyond being a cinematic appetizer, to resemble more a celluloid three-course meal with a second helping of dessert.

Here's the sizable sampler of what's on offer...

Friday – Special Guest

The new Aussie chiller Acolytes – about a group of teens drawn into the dark world of a suburban serial killer – makes it's world premiere with cast and crew in attendance, with a Q&A following the screening. (9.30pm at Forum)

Kosovar actress Arta Dobroshi is in town to present her new film Lorna’s Silence, directed by the Dardenne Brothers (Rosetta, The Child). She'll also take part in Q&A session after the screening. (7.00pm at Greater Union).

There's also a gala screening of Matthew Newton’s directorial debut Three Blind Mice, screening with the Cannes Jury Prize-winning short Jerrycan, with the cast and crew of both films in attendance. (7.15pm at RMIT Capitol)

Friday – Screening Highlights

Tonights sessions showcase the range of this year's program, ranging from the dream-like exploration of the dark corners of a marriage in the Thai film Ploy (9.15pm at Greater Union) to the gay zombie erotica of Otto; Or, Up With Dead People (11.30pm at RMIT Capitol)

Another highlight of tonight's viewing is the Swedish film Let the Right One In, an intriguing twist on the vampire genre adapted from John Lindqvist's award-winning novel of the same name. (7.15pm at Forum)

On the sonic side of things, one of the standouts of this year's Backbeat program is screening tonight: Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell, a profile of an eclectic composer who influenced the New York underground 80s disco scene with his proto-garage dance music. Also don't miss the post-screening dance party – details below..

Arthur Russell Paradise Express

Get your dancing shoes on and give your body up to the music at a disco party at Roxanne Parlour (co-presented with ThreeThousand) following the screening of Wild Combination, celebrating the playful dance tunes of Arthur Russell and Larry Levan's Paradise Garage.

We salute the man who, under the guise of various monikers – Dinosaur L, Loose Joints, Indian Ocean – produced playful and eccentric disco records which were hits of the pre-Studio 54 era.

Features DJ People, Matt Hurst, Declan Kelly and Gloves, playing loft classics all night long.

With a partially cleansed soul and clear conscience I urge viewers to absorb, learn, acknowledge and act.” - Jack Charles. http://www.bastardydocumentary.com
