Widescreen - Monday 4 August

As a massive MIFF weekend winds to a close – from the pumping disco of the Arthur Russell post-screening party on Friday night, to the slew of international and local guests that inundated the Festival in the days that followed – it's time to survey the schedule for MIFF's final week.

Today's Highlights

Monday's screening schedule is a little more leisurely after the frenzy of the weekend viewing, but there are plenty of gems to be found. Some highlights:

Filmmaker Nina Paley presents her dazzling animated reinterpretation of the traditional Ramayana tale, Sita Sings the Blues, mixing an autobiograpical story in with the joyous song and dance sequences. A Q&A follows the screening. (7.15pm at Kino)

Director Aditya Assarate presents Wonderful Town, an subtle romance set among the rebuilding in the south of Thailand in the wake of the 2004 tsunami. The director will take part in a Q&A following the screening. (9.15pm at Greater Union)

Also screening is the uplifting Young@Heart, a spritely doco following the rehersals and tour of a choir with an average age of 81, who specialise in tongue-in-cheek arrangements of punk and rock tunes like 'I Wanna Be Sedated', 'Stayin' Alive', and 'Golden Years'. (7.15pm at Greater Union)

Coming soon

On Tuesday, Melbourne's own Eric Bana presents a film that had a formative impact on him as both an actor and cinemagoer, Mad Max 2. A Q&A session with Bana follows the screening. (Tuesday 5 August 7.00pm at Forum)

Fresh from it's airing at Cannes, the unsettling and visually compelling On War also screens Tuesday, in what is one man's exploration of the bounds of society and hedonism.

Director Julian Cole is in town Wednesday to introduce his documentary on two well-known British artists – Gilbert Prousch and George Passmore – who specialise in making 'art for all', With Gilbert & George. (Wednesday 6 August 7.15pm at ACMI)
